Shalakya Tantra is Ayurveda's specialised branch for diseases of the Urdhwajatrugata Pradesha — the eye, ear, nose, throat, and head. The department trains students in the examination and Ayurvedic management of ophthalmic, ENT, and head-and-neck conditions using classical Kriya Kalpa procedures and instrumentation.
Shalakya Tantra derives its name from the Shalaka — the slender probe-like instruments traditionally used to examine and treat structures above the neck. It encompasses Netra Roga (ophthalmology), Karna-Nasa-Kantha Roga (ENT), Shiro Roga (diseases of the head), and Danta-Mukha Roga (oral and dental disorders), and is one of the eight classical branches of Ashtanga Ayurveda.
The department imparts theoretical and practical training based on the Sushruta Uttaratantra, covering examination methods specific to each sense organ, Netra Kriya Kalpa (the eight-fold ophthalmic procedures such as Tarpana and Anjana), and the medical and minor surgical management of common ENT and ocular disorders.
Students gain hands-on exposure through slit-lamp and otoscopic examination practice, demonstration of Kriya Kalpa procedures on models, and supervised OPD clinical postings for the assessment and management of Netra, Karna, Nasa, and Kantha Roga.
